Penang how long
Any suggestions or recommendations. I am mid 30's travelling with my husband. Looking to explore in Penang and sit back and relax in Langkawi. I would say minimum of 3 days stay. Hotels in Gurney Drive are good but the beach over there is not for swimming, very murky since it is too close to the city. Stay at Batu Ferringhi would be better if you want to enjoy the sea.
Personally I would spend more than Is two days in Penang , as it will not really give you enough time to get a feel for the place. But I can only give you my view point on my likes and dislikes. Where to stay is again a personal choice. I think that Gurney Drive is not a great location as a good place to stay. It overlooks mudflats and other than the malls and the hawkers centre there is not really much.
I would head to somewhere in Georgetown proper, rather than Batu Ferringhi or Tanjung Bungah as you will do your beach bit in Langakwi.
I also agree with TM above.. We went in december last year for 6 days and felt that we didn't get to see and do all we wanted, so we are going back this december for longer.
With 8 days, it is a pity if u don't go langkawi and spend them all in Penang. Take note Batu Feringgi although is a beach, it's nowhere near as good as those in Thailand or Langkawi. I will spend 3 full days in langkawi and 4 days in Penang, I day travel in between. Sleep in Georgetown where all the food and unesco sites are. Go to Batu Feringgi as a day trip on a Saturday when there is a evening market.
Catch a Chinese opera that are staged all over the busy areas as this is a festival month, free. If you have a wifi connection, then you can also use Grab. We flew to Penang but there are other ways to get there depending on where you are. I suggest checking Bookaway to find route options available to you. Once you get into town, you can change a larger amount at one of the currency exchange offices around Komtar shopping mall and bus terminal. The exchange rates are pretty good.
For some reason though, I had trouble with several Maybank machines both at the airport and in George Town. My card kept getting rejected. Unless you want to lounge on the beach, then George Town is the best place for you to stay in Penang.
We stayed on Muntri Street near Love Lane where many of the heritage houses have been turned into cute boutique hostels.
They were so interesting I wanted to go inside every guesthouse to take pictures! Ryokan Muntri, which is just a block away from the main thoroughfare of Chulia Street and its night hawker market, is an excellent choice.
They offer both private rooms and dorm room beds. You can book at room at Ryokan Muntri on Booking. Batu Feringghi is considered the second most popular place to stay in Penang. The entire city of George Town has become a gallery for street art in recent years. The artworks are scattered throughout the city — some tucked away in alleys and behind buildings — so finding and photographing as many as you can makes for a fun treasure hunt.
Penang is hot, especially early in the afternoon, so a more comfortable way of looking for street art is by hiring a trishaw or cycle rickshaw. There are many trishaws in George Town so you can hire one on the spot.
As described above, the afternoon heat in Penang can be oppressive so you may want to hire a trishaw to take you around town. This mint green mansion on Church Street is one of the best-preserved examples of affluent Peranakan living in Penang.
It was once the home of Chung Keng Kwee, a self-made tin mining magnate who became the richest man in Penang in the late 19th century. If you were to visit just one heritage house museum in George Town, then it should probably be this one. Check out my post on Pinang Piranakan Mansion for more pictures and information. This place is interesting.

The Sun Yat-sen Museum is small so you can quickly breeze through it in less than 30 minutes. Check out my post on Sun Yat-sen Museum for more pictures and information.
Cooking classes are fun, even when you have limited experience in the kitchen like me. Penang is famous for its street food so this is a great place to take a cooking class. I suggest searching for one on Cookly. Check out their list of available cooking classes in Penang. It makes for a good day trip from George Town if you enjoy visiting temples. If you fly for food like we do, then it should definitely be on your itinerary. Check out my post on Kek Lok Si Temple for more pictures and information.

This list of 15 delicious things to eat in Penang is what I came up with. Many of the hawker stalls mentioned in this list have been run by the same family for generations.
If you fly for food like we do, then I suggest going to as many of them as you can. This bowl of fish ball noodle soup was hands down our favorite thing to eat in Penang. We both agreed it was number one.
Although traffic was not congested, it was obvious holidaymakers were roaming the city, snapping pictures and looking for good food. Vehicles bearing mostly outstation registration plates could be seen swarming Batu Ferringhi where tourists picnicked at the beach. Architect Salman Lee, 35, said he chose to bring his family to Penang rather than elsewhere as the island was known for its many special places. The attractive promotions of hotel rooms in Batu Ferringhi was another reason he brought his family over.
Many hotels in the beach area now offer cheap room prices to boost domestic tourism since the interstate travel ban was lifted by the government. Among them was factory worker Nursyafiqah Abdul Halim, 25, who came with her family from Teluk Intan. Trishaw rider G. Annachi said although there were many tourists, it was hard for him to get customers.
He added that the income of trishaw riders would only improve if foreign tourists were to come back. Another tourist hotspot that got busy from 7am was the string of popular nasi kandar and roti canai stands at Transfer Road. A check by The Star at the road found long queues of visitors waiting for a hearty Indian-Muslim breakfast. The owner of one of the roti canai stalls, Shahjahan Abdul Hamid, 50, said customers were waiting at his stall from 7am and the crowd started to swell by 9am.
He was glad that there was a team of Rela volunteers to help remind his customers of the physical distancing rule. Local tourists spend long weekend in Penang. Nation Saturday, 02 Jan Related News.
