How does a protestant convert to catholicism

One may wonder how I dealt with my changing beliefs about the Eucharist while serving as a Presbyterian pastor. Over several years I came to believe there was more to be offered and more to be received. The awkwardness came with the awareness that what Christ intended for communicants was a transformative grace, something beyond what Reformed doctrine held and beyond what I too was conveying by being, seemingly, in agreement with that doctrine.

A year before my resignation, I preached a sermon on the seriousness required to receive Communion properly. Afterwards a woman told me she would never again approach Communion with the casualness that she had previously brought to the Table. She and her husband are today Catholic.

My point is: The Lord prepares us to accept His gifts for what they truly are before we realize how badly we need them. He knows perfectly our future needs, and therefore lovingly prepares us to receive from Him exceptional graces when injured by life. My present circumstances are challenging enough with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. I cannot imagine how poorly I would bear my lot were it not for the Eucharist.

Indeed, he believes that when the Catholic Church formally responded to the teaching of the Reformation at the Council of Trent in the mids known as the Counter-Reformation , it denied the most important truth that scripture gives us: that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Of course, James believes that a true Catholic understanding of salvation does not deny grace and the unique work of Jesus Christ.

For him, the offices and sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church are the instruments by which that grace is dispensed. For Chris, no such intermediaries, rituals or works are necessary for salvation. They may have disagreed strongly, but Chris and James enjoyed their conversation.

Both said they prefer crossing doctrinal swords with those of robust theology on the other side, than woolly liberalism in their own denominations.

And, while we can be glad that we no longer burn each other at the stake over these issues, their conversation was proof that many of the disputes which the Reformation first gave rise to are still a going concern today.

So for a Protestant convert to Catholicism to learn to set their proclivities to interpret the Bible by what they think it means aside but rather use the wisdom of the saints and early church fathers is a challenge. However, this is paramount to understanding the Bible.

It will take effort on the part of the convert to, I guess in a way, humble themselves so that they can follow what the Church teaches. One of the biggest Church teachings is that Mary The Mother Of God, was born without original sin and was a perpetual virgin. This of course is hard pill for a protestant convert to swallow because most protestants are taught at early age to think that this ridiculous.

Tim Staples works in Catholic apologetics and masterfully answers many questions about The Virgin Mary in this book. For a Protestant convert, this could prove invaluable. Trent Horn also works in Catholic apologetics like Tim Staples and in his book, Horn tackles many objections against Catholic beliefs; for a Protestant convert, this can and will prove an amazing resource.

What other converts to Catholicism all have to face is that they have to change the way they live in some way when becoming Catholic. If Catholicism is the one true religion, then this is something worth doing. Unlike other religions, Catholicism is built on truth, and with truth you can either conform to it or reject it. Yet when you conform, you have to change how you live, and this applies to any convert to the Catholic faith including Protestant. For a Protestant to become Catholic, they must enroll in RCIA and learn the Catholic faith in a process that takes up to an entire year.

A Protestant convert then will have to learn to follow church teachings, especially in relation to the Bible and what it means. To become a holy and virtuous Catholic for anyone is a lifelong process, but a Protestant convert can and should begin that process. I'm Ronin Booe. I'm a teen and a doofus.
